Everybody seems to know what fire blankets are yet not many actually have one at home. For those who don’t know, a fire blanket is pretty much what it sounds like – a blanket used to extinguish a fire. They are probably best known for being used to put out small kitchen fires but their use doesn’t stop at the cooker.
Fire blankets are made of fire resistant fiberglass and in most cases and come packaged as a folded product with the ability to quickly be released if needed making them easy to store in confined spaces, in particularly kitchens. The inflammable nature of the item allows it to work at temperatures of up to 550˚C and it suffocates a fire, not allowing any oxygen to it and breaking the fire triangle.
Here at Fire Safety Store, we like to keep things simple for you. We have five different sizes of fire blankets: 1m x 1m, 1.1m x 1.1m, 1.8m x 1.2m, 1.2m x 1.2m, 1.8m x 1.75m.
Smaller blankets are ideal for home kitchens or cafe environments that you may associate fire blankets with. Workplaces where there is a higher risk of employees’ clothes catching fire, such as laboratories or industrial scale sites, could benefit from larger fire blankets. Just like the smaller versions, hey can be mounted to a wall and be easily and quickly released so a staff member who may be on fire can wrap themselves in the blanket. Also with larger blankets, you can wrap them around you to give an added layer of protection whilst escaping from fire situations.
You shouldn’t find this to be a problem, but you should never use an old fire blanket. Some older blankets consisted of asbestos fibres woven together and were never rated by safety bodies or authorities. These shouldn’t be able to be find anywhere now but keep an eye just in case.
If using the fire blanket to put out flames, remember to turn off the gas or electric supply, roll up your sleeves and cover your hands with the blanket before placing it on the flames.
