People have long known the fire extinguishing properties of water. Without using water to put out the majority of fires over the course of history, who knows what today’s landscape would look like?!
Although we now know that water isn’t a suitable means to tackle every type of fire there is, water fire extinguishers remain as popular as ever and are still a vital tool when it comes to tackling Class A fires involving common combustible materials such as wood, plastics and paper. Here at Fire Safety Store, we stock only the best quality water extinguishers to help you fight these solid material blazes.
As with all extinguishers, water fire extinguishers must be red. They have a red label for easy identification and to stay within and comply with BS EN3 regulations.
Red labelled canisters are amongst the most common extinguishers found in home and workplaces alike. Because of their effectiveness for tackling fires involving everyday materials found freely around most buildings.
As you’d expect, water fire extinguishers contain water which is pressurised by oxygen. The extinguisher works by spraying a jet of water onto the fire and this jet then penetrates the blaze. This results in flames being extinguished as the burning materials are cooled and unable to reignite. The water cools fuel surfaces and soaks the flammable fuels so that they cannot continue to burn, effectively removing heat from the fire triangle.
Of course, water fire extinguishers should never be used on electrical fires. The only outcome of making this grave mistake would be that the water conducts the electrical current and cause the blaze to become even more widespread and can even result in electric shock for the operator of the canister and others nearby. This type of extinguisher is also a no go when dealing with Class B (petrol, spirits and other flammable liquids), Class C (butane, propane and other flammable gases) and Class F (Cooking oils and fats) fires. They are more or less useless when it comes to trying to quench any type of fire other than those focused on solid combustible materials.
